Guided tour: Saturday, 20 April
Starting time: 3pm (half an hour tour)
Cost: free (excluding museum entrance fee)

There are Dutch tours available on Friday at 2pm and 3pm, Saturday at 2pm, and Sunday at 2pm and 3pm

All tours are free of charge. You only need an entrance ticket to the museum.

In April we are organizing free guided tours for visitors, given by a museum teacher.

During this tour of about half an hour, you will discover the stories behind the exhibition MOØDe where Anton Corbijn presents photographs from his extensive oeuvre (between 1979 – 2023) in which he explores the crossover between portrait photography and the world of fashion. In doing so, Corbijn embraces the terms ‘mood’ and ‘fashion’ in the broadest sense.

I predominantly photograph personalities, but fashion is increasingly part of it. We all decide every morning what we will wear that day, even if it is just a hat or a black T-shirt. Fashion is not always spelled with a capital F. — Anton Corbijn

The beautiful English-language publication MOØDe contains almost 200 photographs from Corbijn’s exhibition of the same name and an essay by Karen Van Godtsenhoven, associate curator of The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The publication is available for €64.90 in our museum shop. Other photobooks by Corbijn are also available for sale.

This year, the Cobra Museum is once again organising a three-day masterclass in collaboration with Tyas Leeuwerink, with the central theme of the personal manifesto.

Personal manifesto
As a maker, you probably recognise that intrinsic motivation to create. Sometimes this flame burns brightly and sometimes it is at a lower pitch, but whatever you make and whatever form you choose, it says something about yourself and how you relate to the world you live in. What do you take in from it, what appeals to you, what do you react to?

Cobra
The work of the Cobra artists is strongly linked to the time in which they live, in the years just after the war. In their personal and collective quest, they strive for change within art and society. How do you relate to the present time and society and how do you give form and substance to your thoughts? Surrounded by artworks from the Cobra collection and the exhibition Anton Corbijn – MOØDe, you will explore this further.

What are you going to do?
In this masterclass, you will work both individually and in groups. For three days, your mind will be set to making and you will be stimulated to create and open yourself up to new ideas. You will explore and dissect your conviction and power of expression and choose the form of expression that best suits it. Working in the studio in our lecture hall alternates with short lectures in which there is room for feedback. The master class concludes with a joint presentation and private drinks.

About the lecturer
Tyas Leeuwerink (1989, Amsterdam) is an artist and a lecturer at several leading museums in Amsterdam, including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. He graduated from the Docent Beeldende Vorming programme and obtained the title Master of Fine Arts at the art academy. Within his work as an artist, the workings of the creative process, the moment of inspiration and working with light and dark are recurring themes. He uses various techniques in his visual work, including projection and moving image.

The Cobra Museum challenges you to create something new out of old denim. Do you have old jeans lying around at home? Or a denim jacket you no longer wear? Turn them into something new! Be inspired and guided by our professional museum teachers and create, for example, a denim flower still life, a handy storage bag or a denim vase. The possibilities are endless!

Photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn presents photos in MOØDe in which he explores the crossover between photography and the world of fashion. The exhibition features around two hundred photos, including Corbijn’s now iconic portraits of model Kate Moss, fashion designer Alexander McQueen and campaign photos for major jeans brands Levi’s and G-Star.

Afterwards, we will make an exhibition of all the creations together in the museum. This exhibition will then be on display at the museum for another week. Of course, you can also choose to take your work home immediately and not leave it behind.

Still have old denim lying around at home? Take it with you!

Music workshop Improvisation and Playing Together

Date: Wednesday 13 March
Time: 15.00 – 16.00 hours
Cost: free (excluding museum admission)
Register: via this link
Group: maximum 15 participants
For: children aged 6 to 10

During this swinging workshop, Rikkert Beek introduces you to the magical world of music!

You will learn about rhythm, melody and learn to make music with instruments such as the wood block, the xylophone and a rhythm egg. During the workshop you will of course mainly get to work yourself, not only making music but also thinking up your own music. Through music, emotions and moods are expressed. For example, emotions of yourself. Did you know that music was also very important to the Cobra artists? They listened to music from all over the world, performed their own songs and painted while listening to the latest jazz music.
During this workshop, you will be encouraged to find the music artist in yourself!
The workshop is open to all levels: from children who have already been exposed to music to those who are making music for the first time.

Rikkert Beek grew up in Amsterdam Oost and was introduced to art early on by his family. From an early age, he received music lessons, including from his father who has been a music teacher at various primary schools in Amsterdam for 40 years.
Besides classical music, Rikkert discovered improvisation, composition, jazz, soul, pop and rock. His musical inspirations can be found in music that shows freedom and individuality.
Rikkert Beek studied both art history at the University of Amsterdam and music theory at the Dutch School of Popular Music. His original music has been released on Spotify, among others, and he has performed in venues such as the Paradiso, Melkweg, Tolhuistuin and the Patronaat.

For the workshop, it is not necessary to bring your own musical instruments, you may (at your own risk).

(Dutch) Lecture by Sytske Frederika van Koeveringe

Date: Saturday 9 March
Time: 15.00 – 15.45 followed by Q&A
Admission: Free for museum visitors. Please register via this link.

In the context of International Women’s Day, the Cobra Museum has invited writer and artist Sytske Frederika van Koeveringe to speak on the occasion of her recently published novel Meeloper. Meeloper is a novel about work. Why is work so connected to our lives and even to our identity? In her book, Van Koeveringe shows in a completely idiosyncratic, original and humorous way how work is intertwined with all aspects of our lives and its value to our society.

During her (Dutch) talk, Van Koeveringe will reflect on the question of what work means to an artist anno nowadays. Does the work of an autonomous artist involve more than the final artwork you see, and if so, what exactly? How autonomous and free is an artist in this day and age? Where are the possible openings to make free work in a society that is mainly about high fixed costs, goal-oriented commissions and achieving successes, and what role does womanhood play in her artistry? This and more will be highlighted in a playful lecture on Saturday 9 March at the Cobra Museum.

Sytske Frederika van Koeveringe (1988) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and has since worked as a writer, painter and artist. She writes novels, essays, drama as well as poetry. Her second book – Dag nacht licht toch – was nominated for the Jan Hanlo essay prize. Her visual work is mainly recognisable by the amount of colour. She is currently working on a 5-by-5-metre painting canvas that will be on display at the Stadsschouwburg from July.
