In the context of International Women’s Day, the Cobra Museum has invited writer and artist Sytske Frederika van Koeveringe to speak on the occasion of her recently published novel Meeloper. Meeloper is a novel about work. Why is work so connected to our lives and even to our identity? In her book, Van Koeveringe shows in a completely idiosyncratic, original and humorous way how work is intertwined with all aspects of our lives and its value to our society.
During her (Dutch) talk, Van Koeveringe will reflect on the question of what work means to an artist anno nowadays. Does the work of an autonomous artist involve more than the final artwork you see, and if so, what exactly? How autonomous and free is an artist in this day and age? Where are the possible openings to make free work in a society that is mainly about high fixed costs, goal-oriented commissions and achieving successes, and what role does womanhood play in her artistry? This and more will be highlighted in a playful lecture on Saturday 9 March at the Cobra Museum.
