Workshop by Jessica Gysel
Jessica is the publisher and one of the editors of Girls Like Us magazine, a feminist and queer arts publication founded in 2005. She developed the magazine through ‘learning-by-doing’ and has become increasingly interested and involved in feminist (artistic) practices in recent years. After receiving a grant from the Mondriaan Fund and the Creative Industries Fund, she researched different forms of collaboration, copyright and ownership, and turned away from the concept of art as a ‘commodity’.
In the workshop during the master class, she and the students explore queer and feminist publishing practices in a collaborative way. By reading together, they explore potential themes for the workshop, establish the context and start sketching some initial ideas about the content. To get to this point, they will work in a large group or in several smaller groups and explore by sketching, drawing, walking and dressing up.
Workshop by Anouchka Oler
The videos and performance of Anouchka Oler-Nussbaum are at once magic tricks, stand-up comedy and experimental philosophy. The characters -a variety of beings from humans to sculptures- invest witty heuristic quests exploring subjects such as affects and power dynamics. Together they seek ways of being in the world and telling stories that are cathartic, reparative and emancipatory. Anouchka Oler-Nussbaum has shown and developed her work with Centre national des arts plastiques CNAP (FR), AWARE : Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions (FR), Triangle France, Entreprise Projects (GR), frac île-de-france – le plateau (FR), Cooper Gallery (UK), MOTINTERNATIONAL (BE), De Appel (NL) and Galerie (INT). Born in Saint Malo, she received an MFA from the Piet Zwart Institute of Rotterdam in 2012 and participated in the post-degree program of the national art school of Lyon in 2015. She lives and works in Brussels where she co-founded and runs feeelings since 2017, an artist-run space working with economic and affective concerns.
The masterclass is sponsored by the Algemeen Nederlands Verbond, the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Utrecht University.
