During this master class Harmen Meinsma will introduce you to the magical world of (portrait) photography. Together you will first look at the exhibition Diana Blok – I challenge you to love me and he will take you along the series of photographs ‘Adventures in Cross-Casting’.
Then you will learn about the different aspects and roles involved in making an intriguing portrait photo. During the master class, you will also get to work yourself and assume the roles of the photographer, the stylist and, of course, the person being portrayed. “We were born naked and the rest is drag.” Is a phrase made popular by legendary drag artist RuPaul. For this master class we will look at the performative aspects of gender and you will be encouraged to step into a different skin for a change.
About Harmen Meinsma
Harmen Meinsma grew up in a small village in Friesland where he lived with his grandmother. In his teens he got his first camera. Photography allowed him to capture unconventional beauty, celebrate it and in doing so, carve out a place in the world for himself and his friends.
Harmen is inspired by people who do not fit into a conventional mold. He photographs people whose expression of identity is not merely a preference, but for whom it is necessary to style themselves expressively. This celebration of the quirky, the unique and the flamboyant characterizes his visual language. “In my work I shine the spotlight on the misfits and birds of paradise in this world and turn them into icons.”
Harmen Meinsma received his BA degree from the Willem de Kooning academy in 2017, specializing in photography. His work has been exhibited in New York during Photoville and at the Kunsthal Rotterdam. In addition, his work has been published in FD Personal, NRC, Vogue Italia and Volkskrant Magazine. Harmen currently lives in Rotterdam.
