Sela (Aire) of November ’96 by Margriet Hoenderdos (1952-2010) is a 60-minute composition for bass clarinet and dancer, not performed for too long, thus unlocking Dutch heritage.
Hoederdos often gave her works the name of the month in which she finished her work, in this case November ’96, and she accompanied them from only very brief explanations. The music speaks for itself and the interpretation is entirely up to the listener. This work lasts 60 minutes and moves around one theme (theme ‘articulation’) on which very subtle variations are always made.
Manuela Tessi: What drives me in my work is the desire to understand the relationship between the musicality of movement and sound. In my movement research I look for sensuality and embodiment in dance, often referring to kinesthetic empathy, how is the movement read by the spectator, not only with the eyes and intellect, but perceived on a visceral level.
