On Sunday, September 15, the second edition of the Cobra Children’s Museum opened. It was a successful afternoon where many families came to see the children’s work.

After a number of preparatory lessons at school, at elementary school Het Palet and de Bloeiwijzer in Amstelveen, children themselves chose a theme for this second edition of the Children’s Museum. Based on this theme, over 35 children, together with accompanying artists, Annet Breure and Julia dos Santos Baptista, set to work creatively to visualize their ideas around this theme. Each time they were taught a new visual technique and they learned to give words to what they made and their ideas about it. The accompanying artists listened to their stories, creating a wonderful audio tour to accompany this exhibition.

Cobra Children’s Museum
The Cobra Children’s Museum is a unique exhibition that shows how children express their ideas around their own chosen theme. A celebration of boundless imagination! It is a place where children have a say in what can be seen and experienced in a museum. Their own place to make that happen. The children are introduced to Museum Cobra, the Cobra ideas, the design process of their own museum and finally the creative execution of it in the form of a real exhibition in the museum. The Cobra Children’s Museum will be built, festively opened and the children themselves will give a tour of their own museum.

This is the second edition of the Cobra Children’s Museum. Start of this second edition were preparatory lessons at school, in which questions like “What is a museum?” and “What should a museum be about?” were central. Through an intensive, 4-day workshop, the children were taken through a creative making process that culminated in this exhibition with its own audio tour.

This second edition of the Cobra Children’s Museum was also developed and supervised by artist and visual teacher Júlia dos Santos Baptista and Annet Breure, story collector and storyteller. For more information, see www.plantenverhalen.nl/florafantastica

Jonas Ohlsson Summerschool: Class of ’24

Monday 22 till Friday 26 juli

Summerschool ’24 was another great success where a lot of art was made.

From Monday through Friday, participants attended various workshops and lectures and made a lot of art under the guidance of Jonas Ohlsson.

For example, Taneesha Sijmons gave a lecture on sexuality. She is a coach on sensuality, relationship and intimacy and is an erotic dancer. Through her work, she empowers and supports people to discover their relationship with themselves, their partner(s), their bodies and to embrace and deepen their sensual well-being. As an erotic dancer, she embodies the celebration of women, demonstrating the power of empowerment. Through her performance art, she emphasizes that nudity and sensuality need not be seen as taboo and uses her art forms to exhibit the beauty, magnetism and freedom within sensuality.

Kenneth Aidoo also conducted a workshop. Kenneth Aidoo is a visual artist who explores the social position of people from the African diaspora through film, paintings, drawings and video installations. He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2019 with a series of portraits, exploring the everyday experiences he encountered in the Netherlands. Other topics in his work include the triangle connection between Ghana, the Netherlands and Suriname, and what it is like to have a tri-cultural identity. Aidoo has exhibited both in the Netherlands and an international show in Antwerp, Belgium. He has been nominated for the Royal Prize for Modern Painting in 2021 and is one of three winners in 2022. His work is in private and public collections.

The week ended with a presentation and closing drinks. The exhibition will be on display at Museum Cobra for a while longer!

The Amstelveen City Council has adopted the advice of the Municipal Executive and decided to provide the museum with an annual subsidy of 1.4 million for a period of three years. This will save the museum and allow it to further develop its artistic and educational ambitions and build a sustainable future.

Future perspective
The future plan includes the choice for a permanent Cobra collection in combination with a strong educational program. Museum Cobra also wants to become a place for various exhibitions that fit in with Cobra’s ideas. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen and council members see the new plans as a promising new start for the museum.

The museum now operates under the name Museum Cobra with a new visual style. The museum will further develop into a multidisciplinary platform with visual art, installations, new media, poetry, literature and music. Collaborations with (local) organizations will be strengthened to promote public participation and education.

End of uncertainty, look to the future
The city council’s decision means that Museum Cobra can concentrate on realizing its ambitions, building on them, making the plans concrete and strengthening the museum’s position.

Word of thanks
The Board of Museum Cobra is indebted to all employees for their loyalty and for writing the future plan. Their commitment and dedication have been invaluable in shaping the future vision of the museum. Museum Cobra thanks the city council members of Amstelveen for all their support and the municipal executive committee for their good cooperation. Museum Cobra looks to the future with optimism and determination.

The ground rules

  • During Museum Week, museums do not have to check whether the Museum Card displayed belongs to the visitor.

  • One visitor may enter per card. So the visitor enters instead of the cardholder. You can always go at another time.
